\n \n <p>Othona walking weeks usually take you rig
ht off the beaten track. This time\, for a change\
, each day's walk will include time exploring a hi
storic Dorset (or Devon) town as well as some of i
ts surrounding footpaths. Leading our adventures i
s Tony Jaques\, Othona warden and a seasoned Dorse
 t walker.</p>\n \n <p>Where shall we go today? Dor
chester with its history before and after the Roma
ns or Lyme Regis beloved of Jane Austen? Wimborne
Minster with an ancient 'chained library' or Axmin
ster famous for carpets and River Cottage? Or some
where else entirely? And how far out of each town
will we find inviting countryside just starting to
turn towards autumn?</p>\n \n <p>On three walk mo
rnings we take packed lunches and head out to expl
ore the treasury of Dorset paths and pavements. Th
e other walk day will give us the chance to eat lu
nch out at a good pub or cafe. There'll be local h
istory\, flora and fauna and no doubt the odd stop
for coffee (and cake?) We'll have one 'rest day'
when any exercise is on your own initiative.</p>\n
\n <p>The paths we follow can be seriously rustic
and in Dorset it's never entirely flat. But these
are amiable ambles\, not macho marches and there
will be very little in the way of hills this parti
cular week. </p>\n \n <p>The aim for each day's ou
ting is to encounter beauty\, to build community a
mong the group\, and to deepen our spiritual conne
 ction to people and place.</p>\n \n <p>The price q
uoted includes accommodation and all meals - excep
t one day when\, instead of picnic food\, group me
mbers can buy a good pub lunch. If numbers are suf
ficient we plan to use Dorset Community Transport
minibuses at the start and finish of each day's wa
lk. This will add <em><strong>an extra cost of app
roximately £50</strong></em> per person for the en
tire week\, payable at the time. (Otherwise we sha
re cars and you are asked to contribute to the ind
ividual drivers' costs.)</p>\n \n <p>No walk is ob
ligatory. (Also\, if you have a non-walking partne
r who books to share your room\, they are welcome
to entertain themselves at Othona while you stretc
h your legs with the rest of us.)</p>\n \n <p>Tony
says: "I don't like to specify the mileage of our
walks\, as it can be misleading. A group always m
oves more slowly than a lone walker. Think of it l
ike this. We are likely to be mainly on our feet f
rom about 11.00 each day to some time around 4.00.
But this includes stops for views\, curiosities a
nd nature observation and a longer lunch break\, a
s well as some deliberate meandering within the to
wns we visit. (Once in the town you <em>could </em
 >just sit in a cafe if that's all you wanted!)"</p
