What the Hell is Happening? A Question for Advent
Life with Artificial Intelligence - how do we face up to it together, practically and spiritually?
Friday 27th November 2026 to Monday 30th November 2026
Space is available on this event!
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
The Irish poet W.B. Yeats wrote those lines in 1919, in the aftermath of World War I, the Bolshevik Revolution, and during the Spanish flu pandemic. But don't they seem even more accurate now? What the hell is happening?
The AI bit
Advent means Coming. But what's on our horizon now? The perils of climate change and international turmoil are bad enough. And we now face a future with Artificial Intelligence that few of us feel confident about and nobody can reliably predict.
Some see it as offering amazing benefits; others as a truly hellish prospect. Even if AI does not become an existential threat to humankind, it will change society and culture in ways even sci-fi writers may not have imagined.
Where do you find yourself? Concerned? Fearful? Intrigued? Mystiified? This weekend will offer some accessible information about the AI revolution, so that all of us go away understanding a bit more. What's really happening and what does it mean for us as unique examples of Human Intelligence? There will be pointers to some useful resources as we try to follow what may happen next month or next year. And it'll be a safe space in which to recognise our thoughts and feelings, to share them (however uncomfortable), to know we are not alone.
The complementary bit
Are you imagining a weekend that's all talk and technology? That's not the plan. Saturday evening brings a total contrast to all the thinking and discussion: as a group let's enjoy a glorious Advent Concert in St Mary Magdalene church, Loders. The choir Cantamus (with Othona's book-keeper Andy among the basses) specialise in mixing sacred and secular music from the last seven centuries.
And on Sunday afternoon there'll be a creative opportunity. As many of us as possible will contribute to an Advent Calendar specific to our present situation with all its uncertainty. What will we place behind those doors to the future?
As darkness falls on the Sunday we will light the first wick on the traditional Advent wreath where four candles represent hope, peace, joy, and love.
Convening this weekend is Othona warden Tony Jaques, with input from individuals whose work and study brings them face to face with AI.
