Obituary for Sylvia Hardy

31July 1933 – 30 May 2026
Sylvia Stoddart as she was then, was one of the stallworts from Norman Motley’s youth group from his parish at Manor Park Ilford, who went to Othona in the late forties, she was 16. It really was primitive in those days but as Sylvia said she found there friendship, freedom and a different approach to Christianity.

Later Sylvia met her husband John Hardy at Othona and with their 4 children founded an Othona dynasty which continues to this day.

Throughout her life and most important to her, Sylvia maintained a strong faith and a deep personal relationship with her Lord. This probably stemmed from the influence of her beloved father.

Sylvia had a great sense of fun and a mischievious sense of humour which made her one of my favourite baby sitters in those far off days. She learnt the art of beekeeping and gardening and was a devoted and much loved grandmother.

Being the indomitable lady she was, with devoted support from her family Sylvia lived independently until 2 weeks before her death when she went to her daughter Janet, and she died peacefully with Janet by her side.

She will be missed by a great many people who remember her kindness and and of course by her family to whom we send our deepest sympathy.
